The Eyes of Myths

A special film program curated by Iván García-Romero, focusing on the meaning and (re)interpretation of ancient myths in cinema. Alongside with the screenings of iconic films, the event featured talks and workshops with experts from different disciplines, exploring the significance of myths for society and the films’ visual narratives.

 

The Eyes of Myths, which was praised by both public and film specialists alike, took place on 3 – 21 September 2022 at Schuur, Haarlem. The long-feature program included nine films from different world cultures, such as Souleyman Cissé's Yeelen, Jean Cocteau's Orphée, Sergei Paradjanov’s The Legend of the Surami Fortress, and Hiroshi Teshigara’s Woman in the Dunes. The short film program featured works of, among other, Kenneth Anger, Amit Dutta, and The Quay Brothers.

All film screening had an introduction by a special guests, such as Kevin Toma (newspaper Volkskrant), Julian Ross (University Leiden / Eye Institute) and Erica Biolchini (University of Amsterdam). Two in-depth talks were organized, in which experts, like Annette Schmidt (National Museum of World Cultures) and independent writer Vamba Sherif, delved into the film theme and its social relevance. A children screening and a children workshop were also organised.
